Sōru Pēnu - Stoneware Sculpture

Sōru Pēnu is the result of an idea that attempts to bring to life Niyam Raja, the God of Niyamgiri in Upendra’s signature totem-like art form. Niyamgiri is home to high-altitude flora and fauna as well as unusually rich wildlife. Upendra borrowed from the pattern of a tamarind leaf to symbolize the flora and the triangles represent Niyam Raja. The curves denote water bodies i.e., s and waterfalls and the straight lines at the bottom represent the boundary of the tribe’s habitation.

This signature totemic ceramic product was created using hand-coiled methods on a wheel. Its red clay with a burnt umber colour is dedicated to Odisha's native flora and fauna.

Sōru Pēnu describes the slow nature-centric lifestyle of the Dongria tribe fused with myriad tales of the land.
