Story
Story
The pangolin is armour that breathes. Every one of its overlapping keratin scales — grown from the same protein that forms human fingernails — is individually articulated, capable of independent movement, the whole surface of the animal shifting and re-shifting as it walks, as it curls, as it sleeps in its tight self-formed sphere. It is the most elaborately defended creature in Odisha's jungles and the most defenceless against the one predator it has no evolutionary answer to.
This stoneware sculpture is a study in that paradox. The ceramic artist has built the pangolin's body the way the animal builds its own armour: scale by scale, each one individually formed and applied to the clay body before firing, each one slightly different in size and curvature from the one beside it — because no two scales on a living pangolin are identical, and no ceramic approximation of that system should be either. The surface, in dark charcoal-brown with deep iron-oxide undertones that shift toward copper in warm light, has the quality of fired earth returning to stone: dense, ancient, a material that has been transformed by heat into something harder than it was, the way the pangolin's scales harden from soft tissue into the keratinous plates of adulthood.
The posture is forward motion — the long, purposeful walk of an animal that knows exactly where it is going and requires no permission to be there. The elongated snout, the powerful haunches, the armoured tail held low: this is the pangolin in its full authority, before the encounter with the human world that it has no defence against. The sculpture is approximately 35 to 40 centimetres long — a presence, not a figurine.
Placed on a stone plinth, a wooden console, a marble shelf: The Pangolin asks its owner to account for the fact of the animal's existence, and its fragility. BEADS designates a portion of proceeds from this sculpture to wildlife conservation and artisan welfare programmes in Odisha.

Care instruction
Care instruction
Raku-fired ceramic requires dry care only — never use wet cloth, water, or any chemical cleaner on the surface. The Raku reduction firing creates a surface that is slightly porous and will absorb liquids; even mild dampness can mark the finish permanently. Dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For crevices between scale elements, use a soft-bristled brush — do not force bristles between scales as fine tips can be fragile at narrow points. The dark charcoal-brown with copper-red and iron-oxide variations is the direct result of the Raku firing atmosphere; this surface will develop subtle character and depth over time, which is natural and desirable. Keep away from direct water exposure and prolonged direct sunlight, which may fade the surface patina. Do not use in microwave. If any element appears damaged, consult a professional ceramics conservator before cleaning or repair.
