The Pakhala Set (Marbled Stoneware)

Clay, in its raw state, has no fixed colour — it is a mixture, a composite of mineral histories, each particle from a different source carrying a different iron content, a different memory of the landscape it came from. The marbling technique used in The Pakhala Set makes this composite nature visible: multiple clay bodies of different tones are wedged together without fully integrating, then thrown or hand-formed in a way that preserves the distinction between them. The result, on the exterior of each vessel, is a landscape of layered strata — brown and ochre and dark umber running together in parallel and intersecting bands, the geological record of clay's own making written on the surface of the pot.The interior of each vessel is glazed in a luminous teal-aqua — the colour of Chilika at depth, the colour of shallow seawater over white sand, a glaze that pools and shifts across the interior surface with the subtle cloudiness of the handmade. Against the marbled earth-tone exterior, the teal interior appears almost impossible: the outside speaks of soil and sediment; the inside holds the sea. This conversation between material and glaze, between the unprocessed and the transformed, is the defining character of the set.The Pakhala Set includes a large serving bowl — the vessel for the soaked rice itself, deep and generous; two medium bowls for accompaniments; a small bowl for pickle or chutney; two side plates for fried items and dried sides; and a tumbler for the pakhala water, which is as important to the dish as the rice itself, drunk at the end of the meal as a digestive and cooling agent. Together, the six pieces constitute a complete pakhala table, every vessel considered for its role in the ritual of the meal.The pieces are sold as a set. The marbling in each vessel is unique: no two pieces in any production run are identical, which means that every set is, in the truest sense, a limited edition of one.
