The River's Daughter

The River's Daughter takes the classical figure and dissolves its lower half into the sinuous, coiling movement of a river in flood. Where a torso would end and legs would begin, the form instead ripples outward into a fluted, serpentine column — the ridges and folds of moving water rendered permanent in fired clay. Vine and leaf motifs are incised along the length of the body, tracing the line between figure and landscape until the two are no longer separable.

The head and shoulders are glazed in a deep cobalt blue, cooling to a smoky iron-and-slate patina along the lower body — the distinctive, unrepeatable result of the Raku firing process, in which each piece is pulled from the kiln at peak heat and subjected to post-fire reduction in combustible material.

No two firings produce the same pattern of colour and crackle.
Sculpted by ceramist Rakesh Rana, the piece stands as a meditation on the Odishan idea that the land's women and its rivers share a single temperament — patient, life-giving, and quietly unstoppable.
