Story
Story
Graha — planet, celestial body, the nine luminaries of Vedic Jyotish that govern time, fate, and the rhythms of existence. Look at this jar and the naming becomes self-evident: a perfect sphere, cream as unlit sky, orbited by rings of cobalt blue, coral orange, and saffron yellow that wrap the form like the atmospheric bands of a distant planet. Set it on a kitchen counter or dining table and it becomes the most quietly extraordinary object in the room — the one that stops people mid-conversation.
What makes the Graha Jar genuinely rare is how its pattern comes to be. There is no brush, no painter, no hand-applied pigment. The colour is born inside the clay itself. Sarada Rout introduces mineral stains directly into the raw clay body during preparation — the same ancient-modern integration technique used across BEADS' celebrated marbling series. But where marbling emerges from folding and layering, the Graha's rings emerge from the centrifugal motion of the potter's wheel. As the clay body rises and thins under Sarada Rout's hands, the embedded stains stretch and align horizontally, following the geometry of rotation, creating bands as precise and as organic as the atmospheric currents they resemble. Each jar is thrown once; the pattern forms itself.
The spherical form — generous at 400ml, lidded with a small domed cap and ceramic knob — is an ancient vessel shape found in cultures from the Mediterranean to the Deccan. It is a shape that wants to be held, that sits with natural authority on any surface, that is as suited to storing spices or tea leaves as it is to sitting empty on a shelf as a contemplation object. The turquoise-green interior glaze, visible when the lid is lifted, is a discovery — a second world inside the first.
