Story

Bhūmi — earth, ground, the stable foundation upon which all things rest. The Bhūmi Table Lamp takes its form from the ancient disc vessel — that flat, rounded shape found in Odisha's temple offerings and prehistoric pottery, the lentil-shaped form that suggests solidity, rootedness, a life lived close to the ground. The ceramic base, hand-formed by Sarada Rout & Rakesh Rana, is wide and low like a river stone worn smooth by centuries of patient water — a shape that has been perfecting itself since before memory.

Encircling the equator of the disc base, a band of repeating geometric motif drawn from Odisha's Pattachitra tradition — the same rhythmic diamond-and-petal pattern found in temple mandapa carvings and woven textiles across the state. The motif is incised into the raw clay before firing, then filled with deep cobalt glaze that contrasts with the cream unglazed body, each unit of the pattern echoing the next in the manner of a devotional chant that gains meaning through repetition. The base body is left in its natural fired cream, the texture of the stoneware itself visible — earth meeting earth.

Rising from this grounded foundation on a copper-toned brass fitting, Ekadasi Barik's handwoven bamboo globe shade diffuses warm light through a cross-woven lattice pattern that casts delicate diamond shadows across walls and ceilings — echoing, in light, the geometric motif that runs around the base below. The pairing is not accidental: Abhijeet Kaushal has designed a lamp where the shade and the base speak the same geometric language, one in indigo ceramic, one in moving light.

Bhūmi is a lamp for those who find comfort in pattern, in repetition, in the knowledge that beauty has been perfected over centuries and does not need to be reinvented. It sits as naturally on a bedside table as on a reading desk or a console in a meditation space.

Care instruction

Dust ceramic base gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Do not use wet cloth or chemical cleaners on the ceramic surface. The patina and surface texture will develop character over time — this is natural and desirable. Clean bamboo shade with a soft brush, following the direction of the weave. Clean copper-brass fitting with dry microfiber cloth; use brass polish occasionally to maintain shine. Ensure ventilation gaps in bamboo remain free from dust. Avoid exposure to excessive moisture. Do not use chemical cleaners on bamboo. Recommended bulb: LED warm white, maximum 30 watts. Unplug before cleaning.

The object story

BHŪMI explores the relationship between pattern and light. The hand-incised ceramic base echoes the same geometric language projected by the woven bamboo shade, creating a quiet dialogue between craft, shadow and space.

Who made it

The stoneware base is hand-formed by Rakesh Rana and Sarada Rout, while the bamboo globe is woven by Ekadasi Barik of Khorda, Odisha. Designed by Abhijeet Kaushal.

Handmade & Small Batch

Made in limited quantities by artisans in Odisha, every Aabha lamp celebrates the beauty of slower
craftsmanship. Subtle variations in clay, glaze and bamboo weaving ensure no two pieces are exactly alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aabha table lamps are designed to create atmosphere rather than replace your primary room lighting. They produce a warm, diffused glow that’s ideal for reading corners, bedside tables, living rooms and spaces where comfort matters more than brightness.

For the intended lighting experience, we recommend a warm white LED bulb (up to 30W). Warm light enhances the ceramic finishes, bamboo textures and the patterned shadows created by the handcrafted shade.

Dust the bamboo shade with a soft brush and clean the ceramic or wooden surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid excessive moisture and harsh cleaning chemicals to preserve the handcrafted finish.

Each Aabha lamp is individually handcrafted by artisans in Odisha. Natural variations in bamboo weaving, ceramic glazing and finishing are part of the making process, giving every piece its own unique character rather than the uniformity of factory production.
