Story

There is a quality of light peculiar to the Eastern Ghats of Odisha — the hill forests of the interior that rise behind the coastal plains and hold within them the Dongria, the Juang, the Kondh, the Bonda. At altitude, the light is different: thinner, cleaner, carrying the scent of deodar and sal and the sound of hill water over stone. The Śikhara Table Lamp is designed for those who know that light.
The ceramic base is a bell-and-urn form in cream unglazed stoneware — a quiet, architectural silhouette that functions as a canvas as much as a vessel. Across its surface, a hand-painted landscape unfolds: mountain peaks rise on the upper register of the base, their outlines drawn in a fine dark line that has the quality of a brushstroke controlled over years of practice — not illustration but inscription, the kind of mark that is also a gesture of reverence. Below the mountains, a band of conifer trees repeats around the circumference of the lamp in a frieze that echoes the decorative registers of Odishan temple architecture — patterned, rhythmic, each tree slightly different in the manner of a real forest where no two trees grow identical.
The painting technique is reminiscent of the narrative traditions of Odishan craft — the wall paintings of Puri temple, the Saura tribe's ittal iconography, the ink-drawn registers of traditional pattachitra scroll work — but translated into a landscape vocabulary that is natural rather than mythological: the world as the hill artist sees it from their village, not as it is described in scripture. This is craft as witness.
Ekadasi Barik's handwoven bamboo globe shade crowns the painted base — the warm amber glow filtering through the cross-woven lattice to fall across the mountain-and-forest painting below, the light picking up the cream of the stoneware and the dark painted lines and rendering them luminous. When lit, the Śikhara becomes the lamp its name describes: a peak, illuminated.

Care instruction

Dust ceramic base gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Do not apply wet cloth or chemical cleaners to the cream unglazed surface as this may lift or blur the hand-painted motifs. The painted decoration is fired into the ceramic and is durable; however, abrasive cleaning should be avoided. Clean bamboo shade with a soft brush following the direction of the weave. Clean copper-brass fitting with dry microfibre cloth; use brass polish occasionally to maintain shine. Avoid exposure to excessive moisture. Recommended bulb: LED warm white, maximum 30 watts. Unplug before cleaning.

Śikhara Table Lamp

When lit, the bamboo globe shade casts warm amber light downward across the hand-painted mountain-and-forest landscape on the cream stoneware below. The light picks up the dark painted lines and renders them luminous. ŚIKHARA becomes the lamp its name describes — a peak, illuminated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aabha table lamps are designed to create atmosphere rather than replace your primary room lighting. They produce a warm, diffused glow that’s ideal for reading corners, bedside tables, living rooms and spaces where comfort matters more than brightness.

For the intended lighting experience, we recommend a warm white LED bulb (up to 30W). Warm light enhances the ceramic finishes, bamboo textures and the patterned shadows created by the handcrafted shade.

Dust the bamboo shade with a soft brush and clean the ceramic or wooden surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid excessive moisture and harsh cleaning chemicals to preserve the handcrafted finish.

Each Aabha lamp is individually handcrafted by artisans in Odisha. Natural variations in bamboo weaving, ceramic glazing and finishing are part of the making process, giving every piece its own unique character rather than the uniformity of factory production.
