What Participants Learn
While most pottery workshops follow a “straight-forward” approach, BEADS focuses on a more holistic and process-driven approach. We begin with understanding clay and ceramic materials to develop familiarity and confidence. We follow this up with understanding hand-building techniques like pinch, coil, and slab methods.
As participants grow comfortable with the material, they move on to wheel throwing, an essential step in developing form and control. Trimming and refining further strengthen the structure, after which surface textures and patterns are added. The glazing stage allows for creative expression through colour choices, and the process concludes with kiln firing and cooling. Through this step-by-step approach, participants gain a complete understanding of both functional and decorative ceramics, from shaping clay to finishing their pieces.

Materials and Studio Support
Unlike many pottery classes in Bhubaneswar that limit material access, BEADS emphasises deep engagement with the craft, encouraging participants to value the process as much as the final outcome. The workshop includes all essential materials and studio support. As a participant, you will receive:
- Clay and pottery tools
- Access to pottery wheels
- Glazes and finishing materials
- Aprons and studio equipment
- Kiln firing support
You can simply show up and immerse yourself in the experience, no additional purchases required. Light refreshments are also provided, and participants can collect their finished pieces after firing.
Raku Pottery Workshop at BEADS
For those looking to learn ceramics in Bhubaneswar beyond the conventional, we also offer an immersive Raku Pottery Workshop. Known for its dramatic firing style, Raku is an experimental ceramic technique that produces unpredictable crackles, smoky textures, and striking metallic finishes which makes every piece truly one of a kind.
The workshop is structured across 3 classes (₹7000 per participant, 10 participants maximum) to ensure focused guidance. In the first session, participants explore Raku theory while designing and hand-building their pieces. The second class centres on refining forms and adding surface details, while the final session is a full-day glazing and live Raku firing experience.
During firing, red-hot pieces are removed from the kiln and placed in combustible materials, creating signature smoke effects. Given the rapid temperature shifts, cracks or breakages may occur which is an inherent part of the Raku process and nothing to be worried about. Participants typically take home up to two finished ceramic works, each looking like a signature piece for keeps.

Pottery, Craft, and The Cultural Landscape of Odisha
Odisha’s rich legacy of handicrafts is deeply rooted in its material traditions spanning across terracotta sculpture, temple ceramics, handwoven textiles and other indigenous craft practices. Pottery, in this landscape, becomes more than just an acquired skill but a continuation of Odisha’s long-standing craft heritage where form, function, and storytelling comes together. Learning pottery also helps foster mindfulness and community bonding which helps one develop a strong sense of presence around them, boosting confidence.
BEADS’ pottery classes are designed to bridge this heritage with contemporary practice. It offers a space where traditional knowledge meets modern experimentation, allowing participants to engage meaningfully with the craft culture. For many, this becomes a first step toward understanding handcrafted design, developing sensitivity to materials, and experiencing the cultural depth of handicrafts through the act of creating.
