Story

The Chitra Table Lamp takes its name and its decorative vocabulary from the Pattachitra tradition — a column of incised diamond lattice encircling the upper register of the ceramic base, rendered in deep brown against cream unglazed stoneware, as precise and as architectural as a carved frieze on a temple wall.

The base form is tall and conical — rising 16 inches from its footing before meeting the copper-finish brass fitting at its crown. It is a different silhouette from the Bhumi's grounded disc or the Jyotsna's perforated cone: more vertical, more architectural in its proportion, a form that occupies height in a room rather than width. The diamond-and-band pattern — incised into the leather-hard clay and glaze-filled in deep brown before firing — occupies the upper third of the base, giving way to plain cream stoneware below. The effect is of a decorated capital on an architectural column: restraint below, elaboration above, each zone making the other more beautiful by contrast.

Ekadasi Barik's disc-shaped bamboo shade sits above on the brass fitting — the wide, shallow weave casting a broad, warm pool of light downward while the lattice of split bamboo throws gentle diamond shadows across surrounding surfaces, echoing the diamond motif in the ceramic below. When lit, the Chitra becomes a lamp that converses with itself: the incised geometry at the base amplified and projected by the weave above.

Designed by Prakriti Bala and handcrafted by ceramists Sarada Rout and Rakesh Rana with master bamboo weaver Ekadasi Barik — four hands and two crafts in a single lamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aabha table lamps are designed to create atmosphere rather than replace your primary room lighting. They produce a warm, diffused glow that’s ideal for reading corners, bedside tables, living rooms and spaces where comfort matters more than brightness.

For the intended lighting experience, we recommend a warm white LED bulb (up to 30W). Warm light enhances the ceramic finishes, bamboo textures and the patterned shadows created by the handcrafted shade.

Dust the bamboo shade with a soft brush and clean the ceramic or wooden surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid excessive moisture and harsh cleaning chemicals to preserve the handcrafted finish.

Each Aabha lamp is individually handcrafted by artisans in Odisha. Natural variations in bamboo weaving, ceramic glazing and finishing are part of the making process, giving every piece its own unique character rather than the uniformity of factory production.
