Story

The ceramic base by Sarada Rout rises as a tall bell-form — 16 inches from base to brass fitting — glazed in a wash that moves from pure cream at the shoulder down to a deep, luminous turquoise green at the foot. The glaze is not uniform: it runs and pools as glazes do on handmade surfaces, finding its own thickness in the curves, thinner on the peaks and heavier in the hollows, so that the turquoise shifts between sea-glass, jade, and the particular green of a rain-washed banana leaf depending on the angle and quality of light. No two bases will carry the same gradation.

But it is what grows from the lower half of this base that arrests attention. Sarada Rout has hand-built individual botanical leaves — broad, veined, generously proportioned forms — and applied them to the clay surface one by one before firing, each pressed in place with the trace of the maker's hand still visible in the body. These are kisalaya: leaves caught mid-unfurl, their edges still slightly curved, their surfaces carrying the faint impression of the fingers that formed them. An iron oxide stain gives them a warm, earthy tone — dark against the turquoise ground, organic form against ceramic smoothness — the oldest contrast in Odishan craft.

Ekadasi Barik's disc-shaped bamboo shade sits above on the copper-finish brass fitting, wide and low, casting its amber warmth downward into the leaf cluster below. The bamboo's honey-toned light picks up both the turquoise and the iron-brown of the leaves, sending a warmth into the room that is inseparable from the word this lamp is named for. Kisalaya is a lamp for the person who understands that the most beautiful moment in any life — plant, craft, or human — is not the full bloom, but the tender opening that precedes it.

Designed by Prakriti Bala, handcrafted by ceramist Sarada Rout with master bamboo weaver Ekadasi Barik.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aabha table lamps are designed to create atmosphere rather than replace your primary room lighting. They produce a warm, diffused glow that’s ideal for reading corners, bedside tables, living rooms and spaces where comfort matters more than brightness.

For the intended lighting experience, we recommend a warm white LED bulb (up to 30W). Warm light enhances the ceramic finishes, bamboo textures and the patterned shadows created by the handcrafted shade.

Dust the bamboo shade with a soft brush and clean the ceramic or wooden surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid excessive moisture and harsh cleaning chemicals to preserve the handcrafted finish.

Each Aabha lamp is individually handcrafted by artisans in Odisha. Natural variations in bamboo weaving, ceramic glazing and finishing are part of the making process, giving every piece its own unique character rather than the uniformity of factory production.
