Story

Sañcaya — Sanskrit for "accumulation" or "gathering" — names this vertical, freestanding ceramic form in shifting blues, its surface built up from clustered ridges, coiled bead-forms, and cavernous openings, read as a coral colony caught mid-growth or the collected accretions of a tide-pool over centuries.

Where the wall-mounted Apardana series speaks to erosion and decay — surfaces shaped by loss — Sañcaya is its natural counterpoint: a form built by slow, patient accretion, gathering rather than wearing away. Hand-built by Saroj Rout and Sarada Rout, the piece stands freestanding rather than wall-mounted, its irregular silhouette and pierced hollows inviting the eye to travel around and through it rather than across a single flat face.

Care instruction

  • Dust gently with a soft, dry brush, working into the clustered ridges and pierced hollows where debris can settle.
  • To clean, use a lightly damp — not wet — soft cloth on the outer glazed surfaces only; dry immediately with a soft cloth.
  • Do not use chemical or abrasive cleaners on the glazed surface.
  • Handle by the base only; avoid lifting or gripping the piece by its raised bead-forms or narrower pierced sections, which are decorative rather than structural.
  • Display on a stable, level surface away from high-traffic areas, given the piece's height and freestanding form.
  • Avoid direct, prolonged sunlight to preserve the depth of the glaze tones.
  • For display purposes only; not intended for outdoor placement or use as a functional vessel.
