Story
Story
Water has always been the governing metaphor of Odisha — a state shaped by the Mahanadi, the Brahmani, the Baitarani, and the long arc of its coast. The Sravantī Table Lamp is designed at the meeting point of these waterways: not the sea, not the river, but that in-between place where fresh water slows and salt water retreats and the surface of the world becomes a field of light.
The ceramic base, hand-formed in stoneware, rises as a bell-form — the same architectural silhouette seen in the domes of Odishan temple sanctuaries and the inverted vessel forms of ancient ritual pottery. The upper register is glazed in a luminous teal-jade, a colour that shifts between sea-green and celadon depending on the angle of the light — the colour, specifically, of the Chilika Lake in the early morning when the sky has not yet decided whether it is grey or blue. The lower register is left in natural cream unglazed stoneware — earth before water, the dry bank before the current.
Between these two registers, Sarada Rout has placed a band of individual hand-formed sculptural elements: raised, rounded forms applied one by one to the surface of the clay before firing, each one slightly different from the next in the manner of sea foam or river bubbles or the clustered heads of monsoon blossoms. The effect, at once geological and marine, is of something growing — accretion, accumulation, the patient building-up that is the signature of all living systems. The teal-blue glaze runs over and between these raised elements, pooling in the hollows and thinning on the peaks, creating a surface that is never the same colour twice.
Abhijeet Kaushal has set this base on a copper-toned brass fitting that bridges the ceramic world below and Ekadasi Barik's handwoven bamboo globe shade above — a cross-woven lattice of split bamboo that, when lit, casts a moving field of diamond shadows across walls and ceiling, as if light itself were rippling. Sravantī is a lamp for rooms that understand that beauty, like water, is always in motion.

Care instruction
Care instruction
Dust ceramic base gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Do not use wet cloth or chemical cleaners on the ceramic surface. The raised sculptural elements at the mid-band are securely fired ceramic but should be dusted with care using a soft brush rather than pressure. Clean bamboo shade with a soft brush following the direction of the weave. Clean copper-brass fitting with dry microfibre cloth; use brass polish occasionally to maintain shine. Ensure ventilation gaps in bamboo shade remain free of dust. Avoid exposure to excessive moisture. Recommended bulb: LED warm white, maximum 30 watts. Unplug before cleaning.
