Story
Story
There is a moment, well known to marine biologists and ancient storytellers alike, when an octopus changes colour. Not in panic, not in camouflage, but in contemplation — a slow, deliberate wash of pigment moving across the skin the way weather moves across a landscape, something happening in the interior made briefly visible on the outside. The Deep captures precisely this moment.
Rakesh Rana's ceramic octopus sculpture is a work of extraordinary observation and patience. The body rests low and wide in the posture of a creature entirely at ease — not posed, not theatrical, but simply present in the manner of something that has been here far longer than we have and intends to remain. The mantle rises in a smooth dome glazed in a luminous teal-celadon that bleeds, at the crown and across the shoulders, into deep plum and burgundy — the reactive glaze responding to the kiln's atmosphere as an octopus responds to its inner life, unpredictably and beautifully. Where the teal and plum meet, the glaze creates pools of iridescent metallic shimmer that shift as the light changes across the day.
Eight arms spread across the surface in full naturalistic extension, each one individually hand-formed and positioned in the subtle asymmetry of real movement — no two arms curve identically, because no real creature moves with the symmetry of a factory. The sucker detail is the piece's most remarkable technical achievement: each arm carries rows of individually formed, glazed suction cups in deep teal and brown-bronze, the hollow centres catching light to create a textural depth that rewards close examination. The eyes — amber and gold, set under the brow of the mantle — look outward with the quiet, particular intelligence that has made octopuses the subject of philosophy, poetry, and scientific wonder for millennia.
The ancient Sanskrit texts speak of the ocean as sāgara — the great container, the keeper of depths, the place where all rivers eventually arrive. The Deep is a meditation on that word: on what lives below the surface, on intelligence that evolved separately from our own, on the beauty of forms that the land-world rarely encounters and never fully understands. It is a piece that asks something of the person who places it on their shelf — not just to admire the craft, but to sit with the strangeness of another kind of mind rendered, lovingly and carefully, in clay.
A collectible piece. Made in very limited numbers. No two are identical.

Care instruction
Care instruction
Use only a dry soft cloth to remove dust. Do not use wet cloth or chemical cleaners on the ceramic surface. The reactive glaze will develop subtle depth and character over time — this is natural and desirable. Handle with both hands, supporting the base and the arm spread. Avoid placing on unstable surfaces where tentacle tips could catch. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This product is handcrafted — variations in glaze colour, depth, and iridescence between pieces are inherent to the process and are not flaws.
