Story

Nīladala — the blue leaf. In Sanskrit, nīla is the deep blue that belongs to the ocean's horizon, to Krishna's skin at dusk, to the indigo plant that has dyed the cloth of the subcontinent for five thousand years. Dala is the leaf, the petal — the single fundamental unit from which all plant life builds its canopy.

Together they name both what you see on the face of this clock and what inspired it: a single leaf of the Bush Clock Vine — Thunbergia erecta — that African arrival which found its way into the compound borders of Odisha, its ovate-elliptic leaves dark and glossy, its blue-purple flowers with cream throats blooming without pause through the warmest months. Sarada Rout pressed one of these leaves — a single specimen, complete, at the height of its life — directly into raw white stoneware clay. The impression it left behind is total: every vein, every branching channel of the leaf's interior network captured in ceramic with a fidelity that a botanical illustration might envy.

Abhijeet Kaushal then brought the Pārijātā collection's signature cobalt blue into the veined surface — not as a wash or a glaze overall, but as a precise inhabitation of the impression, the colour settling into the leaf's captured architecture so that what reads on the white ceramic face is the complete vascular map of a single leaf, rendered in the blue that is also the plant's own colour.

The clock mechanism — precision silent-sweep — sits at the centre of the leaf, its slim dark hands moving across the vein network as if measuring not hours but the slow pulse of sap. The form is the same generous disc that anchors the Pārijātā clock family: 9.14 inches of white stoneware, 1.5 inches deep, a sculptural presence on any wall that functions because time must be told, and art because a leaf this beautiful demands to be seen.

The Bush Clock Vine arrived in Indian gardens without ceremony — no ancient myth, no temple carving. But it stayed because it is beautiful. The Nīladala clock is BEADS' act of noticing — a document in ceramic of a plant that has lived quietly in the gardens of Bhubaneswar, unremarked and extraordinary.
